Affordable Cruelty Free Brands

Recently one of my followers Shweta Suresh suggested that I do a post on cruelty free brands because I had talked on one of my posts about how I think testing on animals is wrong. Thanks for the suggestion Shweta! I thought that was a really good idea because I actually love makeup and people who have been following me for a while now may remember I used to do makeup posts regularly before pretty regularly. I also have a lot of makeup posts on my Instagram. I decided that for this post I’ll talk about brands that I use on an almost daily basis and really enjoy. Here are my four favourites:

ELF So ELF is probably my favourite cruelty free brand of all time. It has a very impressive range of products for really affordable prices. And for the price the quality is super impressive. I have multiple different ELF products and the only problem I have had so far with any of them is that you kind of have to build up the eye-shadow before it shows really well however this makes them perfect for the everyday natural look. I use their foundation and concealer whenever I have to go out and I am so impressed by how long it lasts and how well it blends. The only problem I have with their foundation and concealer is that I wish they had more options for women of colour because I have to mix two shades to get my shade which is kind of annoying. All ELF products are cruelty free and vegan. Oh and if you have an account with them you get a free gift on your birthday

NYX- I really love NYX and their lipstick and lip liner are products that I use almost daily. They are one of the few drugstore brands that actually have nude or natural lipstick shades that don’t look insane on people of colour and for that I’m very grateful. I’ve tried a lot of lipsticks from multiple brands that just look so weird on me because of the shade contrasting with my skin tone. They are fully cruelty free and partially vegan so if you’re looking for vegan products make sure to check their site for what products are and are not vegan.

Kat Von D- KVD is among the most affordable brands at Sephora. Obviously they are not drugstore brand affordable but for a high end brand they are quite affordable especially if you get the products when they are on sale. Their products are really great quality and even if it is a little more expensive than brands like ELF and NYX personally I think they are worth the splurge. Kat Von D is fully cruelty free and vegan.

Essence- Essence is another brand that I wear almost daily. Their lip gloss is one of my favourites- usually lip gloss annoys me because it’s sticky but this one isn’t annoyingly sticky at all. And literally all my nail polishes are from Essence. They last for ages and have such pretty colours! Actually when I went back home to Kenya last year I put on some nail polish and it lasted so long without chipping my mum was like omg what nail polish is that it’s been on for like forever and then she told me to get her some when I go back this year! All Essence products are cruelty free and partially vegan so again check their site for what’s vegan.

5 Things I Learnt While Studying Abroad

Studying abroad has been a very interesting experience and these are some of the things that I’ve picked up over the way:

Change is good- as someone with anxiety I am not a fan of change in any way whatsoever. Weirdly enough though I love the idea of change but moving to Canada taught me that change in real life is good too and sometimes taking a chance can be the best decision of your life.

You need to find your own happiness- moving to a new place isn’t going to make you happy or satisfied. You need to find your own happiness.

Everything is a challenge- living abroad is not always what movies make it out to be. Yes, it’s an amazing experience if you make the most of it but it can also be extremely difficult. You’re in a new place where you probably don’t know anyone or anything and adjusting takes a while. Doing your research helps though!

Make the best of everything- bad things will happen but instead of fixating on these make the best of the experience and make as many memories as you can!

Every place is unique- every place is unique an beautiful and remember to appreciate this whenever you can! Make sure to make memories while you’re there and make the most of it!

Why Your Traffic Has Decreased

A small decrease in views once in a while is totally normal however if you notice a consistence decrease in views you may be making some of the following mistakes which luckily are very easily fixable!

Not responding to comments-  A large number of bloggers really enjoy communicating with one another and socializing with everyone. Commenting is a very important part of the blogging experience and not replying to comments may be one of the reasons your readers aren’t returning. A lot of people may prefer to read blogs from people they can interact with.

Not being active- I say this a lot but it’s definitely true- WordPress is very much a two way street. If you don’t support other blogs they are going to stop supporting you too. If you notice that someone consistently likes and comments on your blog make sure to return the favour. This will encourage people to keep coming back to your blog. If you don’t return the favour people may stop returning to your blog over time. For more on how to be active on WordPress click here.

Not being consistent- If you don’t post consistently at the same time readers may not know when to visit your blog for new posts. If you don’t post for a while they may also think you’ve stopped blogging which is pretty common sometimes. Scheduling your post and remaining consistent can really help increase your traffic. For more on how to schedule your posts click here.

Not using tags well- I always say this as well but tags are super important when it comes to blogging! Not using the correct tags or the tags that could bring you optimum views can really cut down your views, likes and follows. For more on how to use tags correctly click here.

Random Drama

As you guys know content by myself and W.Wang was stolen some time ago and I made a post about it. Someone decided that this was the perfect opportunity to wrongfully blame me for apparently stealing my About Me page from my friends blog who had started blogging before me. Yes I did use her layout as I was totally new to blogging but we were in conversation the entire time and she was totally fine with it which I attempted to explain to this person but some people just don’t seem to see reason. The person then began threatening and blackmailing me and said that if I didn’t post screenshots of the conversation from 5 YEARS AGO where my friend agreed to letting me use her layout/style:

20200331_152246

I’m not afraid of them and I have no doubt that whomever they email will not take the matter seriously. However, I genuinely do have the screenshots so I wanted to share them here on this post and send them a link to it in the comments section because I don’t have a Business Plan and can’t attach images to comments. I have nothing to hide and I know I’m in the right so here they are:

If you’re not interested in the drama please feel free to ignore this post I just did it to prove my side of the story.  I will post my regular posts at regular timings tonight. If you are interested in the full drama because who doesn’t love drama feel free to check out the post it happened in by clicking here.

Also want to take this moment to say that she doesn’t deserve credit for my About Me page because she deserves SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. She is the reason I started this blog, she constantly helped, encouraged and inspired me throughout the terrifying process of posting your first few posts and has remained a big inspiration to me even though she doesn’t blog anymore. I don’t owe her credit for my About Me page I owe her credit for the very existence of this ENTIRE BLOG.

Female Country Musicians To Check Out While You’re Stuck At Home

So as you guys probably remember I took that one course on country music and haven’t shut up about it since lol… Anyway I decided to share some amazing female artists with you guys because apparently female artists in country at the moment aren’t doing great and are being ignored by mainstream country so I thought I would do my part and share their amazing music with you guys!

The Dixie Chicks

The Dixie Chicks are one of, if not the most, iconic female country band of the 1990’s and 2000’s. They have always had a very unique sound even when they first started out and over the years that sound have moved away from the usual country sound to a more alt.country sound. This was probably a conscious choice because after the controversy that they faced they said that they no longer felt like they were part of mainstream country and so they may have changed their sound to alt.country which seemed to welcome them. They recently finally put out music after 14 years and expected it did not disappoint.

Kacey Musgraves

She is definitely one of my favourite country musicians at the moment! She emerged at a time when country music did not have a lot of strong female musicians and those that did exist were sort of being sidetracked by “bro-country” which was growing increasingly popular. Unlike a lot of mainstream country musicians she is a lot more liberal and many of her songs do have political messages. She also has an alt.country sound but also has a lot of elements of mainstream country.

Miranda Lambert

Miranda Lambert is exactly what you think of when you think of a badass Southern girl that’s strong and independent. She has solo music as well as with her group Pistol Annies. She sounds very country unlike the earlier two and definitely sticks with her roots. I personally find her music extremely raw and empowering.

Dolly Parton

I mean I couldn’t possible make a list of female country musicians and leave out Dolly! She is one of the most iconic country musicians of all time and a living legend. She is not only a brilliant musician but also a brilliant business woman who has achieved so much in her life despite coming from a pretty rough background. If you haven’t heard Dolly Parton yet I don’t know what you’re waiting for.

The True Heroes Of Our Time (Guest Post)

By Andreas Cvetkovic Destounis

One thing I hope will happen as a result of the corona-outbreak is that more and more people will acknowledge the real heroes of our society. And I’m happy to see that there has been an increase in this acknowledgement. We have seen more and more people showing their gratitude to their countries health-care workers, working in hard conditions trying to help people. But this shouldn’t have started with the corona-outbreak and it shouldn’t end when the outbreak ends. And it shouldn’t be limited to health-care workers only.

I got my first job in 2017 when I started working at a daycare. I had of course gone to school and university, and there we learned about other heroes. When we were small children our hero was Pippi Longstocking. In high school it was Winston Churchill. In university coffee was our hero as it could keep us awake. When I started working at the daycare I noticed how unaware I had been of our society’s real heroes for the first 21 years of my life.

I remember that the first day working at the daycare was a very messy one. No one seemed to really know what part of the daycare I was going to work at, and I was moved around several times just within the first hour. Since that day in the spring of 2017 I have worked in several different daycares in my hometown of Stockholm up until the middle of 2019. So I have my fair share of experiences. But I didn’t need nearly that much time to understand why that first day was so messy. It actually just took a few days. And that in turn led me to understand that it wasn’t Pippi Longstocking, Churchill or coffee that were our true heroes. The true heroes of our modern society were my coworkers at the daycare. (Even though coffee helped me, as well as my co-workers, while working at the daycare. So we can still count it as a hero).

Low pay, long hours and tiring work with a lot of responsibilities are a few things that define working at the daycare. I can’t speak for other countries, but I can speak for my own country of Sweden. And here this definition is hardly unique for people working at a daycare. The same goes for nurses, police-officers, taxi-drivers, among many. I constantly hear on the news of police-officers and teachers quitting their jobs because they can’t take it anymore, and of nurses and taxi-drivers having to work overtime for free because, well, they just have to.

I had heard about all of this even before I started working at the daycare. But just like a lot of people, I didn’t give it a second thought. After working at a daycare for some time, I could suddenly sympathise with them.

That first day that I mentioned earlier, it was messy because the staff at the daycare had so much workload that they couldn’t pay attention to me. As I said, I have worked in several (seven to be precise) daycares, and the thing that was constant in all daycares was the frustration and anger of the staff. And also the high number of staff seeking help for mental-health problems. I often just wanted to sit down with them and tell them that everything will be alright, even though I knew that it probably wouldn’t.

As an ending I want to go back to what I said in the beginning. Up to now I think that a lot of people are unaware of the heroes working these types of jobs, just as I was before I started working at the daycare. But the corona-outbreak has made it obvious what heroes they are. Health care-workers have to risk their health working with corona-patients, staff at daycares and supermarkets, as well as bus drivers, have to risk their health coming in close contact with people who might very well have the virus. All while the rest of us are being told to stay at home. And this has made people see them as the heroes they are. Let’s hope it persists when the outbreak is over. The next time you go to the supermarket or ride the bus, please make sure to show your gratitude to the person behind the counter or the wheel.

Stolen Content And Plagiarism Alert

I’m sure you guys remember that a while back I did an interview for W. Wang’s blog which was an amazing experience. Unfortunately yesterday I found out someone had plagiarized this interview to make it look like the interview was done by them. No credit was given to W. Wang and his name was actually replaced by the name of the plagiarizer.

Original Post

Plagiarized Post

Screenshot_20200327-185534_Chrome

Of course I instantly reached out to W. Wang and let him know because this was his content as well as his hard work being plagiarized. We both reported the blog and I left a comment letting them know that this post is plagiarized and that they need to take it down or use the original post giving full credit to W. Wang. However they have not responded.

Screenshot_20200327-185754_Chrome

So I am sharing this information with you for three reasons. First- I just want to let people know that plagiarism is clearly wrong so don’t do it. Secondly, if you really enjoyed someones content and want to share it there are legal ways to do so without stealing their content such as reblogging or sharing using the share button at the bottom of the post. Lastly, I wanted to ask you guys to report the plagiarized post so that the post gets taken down by WordPress.

If you aren’t sure how to report the post here are the instructions:

1.Click here to go to the blog.

2. Click on the three dots at the bottom of the post.

How To Report

3. Click the “report post” option.

How To Report 2

4. Once you click that you will be redirected to a different page. On that page report the post as spam. I would say report it as copyright infringement but that’s a whole thing (thanks WordPress!) so just report it as spam.

How To Report 3

How To Report 4

Thank you so much for reporting the post- the more it’s reported the faster it gets taken down! W. Wang and I really appreciate your support.

5 Ways To Remain Positive

With everything going on in the world right now plus being stuck at home it’s easy to start to feel more negative. It can also feel a lot worse if you already suffer from mental health problems like anxiety and depression. Here are some ways  to stay positive:

Pamper yourself- Take a day or even a few hours/minutes out of your day/week to pamper yourself. When you’re stuck at home it’s easy to let yourself go and stop pampering yourself but it’s important to set some “me time” aside for yourself. It can be as simple as putting on some lotion and lipstick or taking a nice hot bath. It really helps clear your mind and bring some more positivity into your life.

Keep busy- Make sure not to completely let yourself go and sleep in all day (happened to a friend of mine… 😂) but it’s a good idea to maintain your usual routine at least to an extent. Sleeping in too much can actually be bad for your mental health and it can make you feel more depressed, sad and or negative in general. Keeping your general routine or if that’s not possible at least finding some activities/hobbies to do while you’re at home can really help you feel better.

Surround yourself with positivity- I know it’s easy to fall down a hole of reading negative news all day but make sure to read/watch/do something positive too. You can read some inspirational quotes or read an inspirational book or just watch some cat videos on YouTube!

Stay in touch with people you care about- Even though being around people you care about may not be an option right now it’s a good idea to keep in touch with them. It really helps improve your mood and kind of distracts you from any negative feelings you may be experiencing.

Breathe- Taking deep breathes especially when you’re feeling anxious, depressed or panicky can really help calm you down and bring more positive energy into your mind.
